Your safety
Browsing safely
If you're worried someone may check your phone or computer, these steps can help you visit this site more safely.
If you are in immediate danger, call 999. If you can't speak, stay on the line and press 55. The National Domestic Abuse Helpline is free and open 24/7 on 0808 2000 247.
No method is completely safe. If you think your devices are being monitored, the safest option is to use a device the other person can't access, such as a library computer, a work computer or a trusted friend's phone.
Our website
- Quick exit: the red button at the top of every page, or pressing Esc twice, takes you straight to a weather page. It does not clear your history.
- No cookies: our site doesn't use cookies or store anything on your device. Our visitor statistics are anonymous.
Use a private window
A private window doesn't save the sites you visit to your history. Close it when you've finished.
- Chrome: menu (⋮), then New Incognito window
- Safari on iPhone: tap the tabs button, then Private
- Safari on Mac: File, then New Private Window
- Edge: menu (…), then New InPrivate window
- Firefox: menu (☰), then New private window
- Samsung Internet: tabs button, then Turn on Secret mode
Clearing your history
If you've already visited without a private window, you can delete this site from your history.
- Chrome: menu (⋮), History, then remove individual pages
- Safari on iPhone: Settings, Apps, Safari, then Clear History and Website Data
- Edge and Firefox: menu, History, then delete the pages you want to remove
Clearing all your history can look suspicious to someone who checks regularly. Deleting only the pages you visited here may be safer.
Messages, calls and email
- WhatsApp: messages stay on your phone and on any linked devices, such as WhatsApp Web on a shared computer. You can delete a chat afterwards, and check Settings, then Linked devices, for devices you don't recognise.
- Phone calls: our number will appear in your call log. You can delete it afterwards.
- Email: if someone may know your password, consider creating a new email account they don't know about, and use it only on a safe device.
- Our enquiry form: tell us in the form whether texts and voicemails are safe, or if you'd prefer calls or email only. We'll always respect your choice.
Signs your device may be monitored
- Someone knows things you have only said in messages or searched for
- Apps you don't recognise, or your battery and data running down unusually fast
- Your location being shared through Find My, Google Maps or a family-sharing app
If you think there is tracking software on your phone, removing it can alert the person who installed it. Please speak to a specialist first, such as the National Domestic Abuse Helpline or Refuge (opens in a new tab), who can help you plan safely.
